What is Snus?

Snus is a term that covers two different products that often get confused. Traditional snus is a moist tobacco product from Sweden that's been around for centuries. What most brands sell today under the snus label are tobacco-free nicotine pouches — small white pouches with a nicotine blend and flavourings, no tobacco leaf at all. This guide covers what modern nicotine pouches actually are, how they work, and how to choose the right one.

What's in a modern nicotine pouch?

Tobacco-free nicotine pouches typically contain pharmaceutical-grade nicotine, plant-based filler (usually cellulose), flavourings, and moisture regulators. No tobacco. No smoke. No spit required. They're used the same way as traditional snus — tucked under the upper lip — but the similarity ends there.

Traditional snus vs tobacco-free pouches

Traditional Swedish snus contains tobacco and is only legally sold in Sweden within the EU (it's banned in all other member states). What's sold as snus across the rest of Europe — including at Snusmania — is the tobacco-free nicotine pouch version, which is legal throughout the EU. When people outside Sweden say they're buying snus online, they're almost always buying nicotine pouches.

How snus works

You tuck the pouch under your upper lip, against the gum. Nicotine absorbs through the mucous membrane — the thin tissue lining the inside of your lip. The hit arrives within a few minutes, without any smoke or vapour. Most people keep a pouch in for 20 to 45 minutes, then dispose of it in the compartment built into the can lid.

How to choose the right snus

Two things define your experience: strength and flavour.

Strength ranges from light (around 4 to 8 mg/g) through medium and strong to extra-strong (30 mg/g and above). If you're new, start light and work up. Extra-strong brands like Pablo and Iceberg are for experienced users who know their tolerance.

Flavour is mostly mint or fruit. Mint gives a cooler, fresher feel. Fruit tends to be sweeter. Velo is the most popular brand for newer users. Killa and Cuba are popular for experienced users who want more strength and bold flavour.

Popular brands at Snusmania

The range covers all levels of strength and flavour preference:

  • Velo – the most approachable brand, good for beginners, wide flavour range
  • Zyn – clean, dry, low-drip pouches from Swedish Match. Good starting point.
  • White Fox – premium mint, strong, made by GN Tobacco in Sweden
  • Killa – extra-strong with a huge fruit flavour range
  • Cuba – extra-strong, bold fruit and cola profiles
  • Pablo – tropical fruit, very strong
  • Iceberg – extreme strength, for the most experienced users

Who uses snus?

Nicotine pouches are used by adults who want a smokeless, vapour-free way to use nicotine. They're popular with former smokers, people who want a discreet option in settings where smoking or vaping isn't practical, and users of traditional snus who've switched to tobacco-free alternatives.

Snus FAQ

Is snus the same as chewing tobacco?

No. Snus is a pouch product used under the upper lip. Chewing tobacco is chewed. Modern nicotine pouches sold across Europe are also completely tobacco-free.

Is snus legal in the EU?

Tobacco-free nicotine pouches are legal throughout the EU. Traditional tobacco snus is only legal in Sweden.

Does snus cause cancer?

The research on nicotine pouches is still developing. They don't produce smoke or tar, which removes the major carcinogenic drivers of cigarettes. However, nicotine is addictive and any nicotine product carries health considerations.

How long does a snus pouch last?

Most pouches are designed for 20 to 45 minutes of use.

Is modern snus tobacco-free?

The nicotine pouches sold across Europe are tobacco-free. Traditional Swedish snus contains tobacco and is only sold in Sweden.
